Emotion continues to be the buzz-word for technology sales. Sony's PlayStation is sold on its graphical emotion engine and Vodaphone users are asked 'How are you?. Products are targeted on how they make you feel in addition to what they do. It is strange and somewhat misguided that with all the interest in emotion there are no dedicated emotion laboratories and no technologies which can automatically detect it.

All sociology commentators agree that as humans we have a psychological need to communicate with our fellows using emotional cues. Our desire to have human communications can be further highlighted by how we can sometimes project human personalities onto the technological devices we use, such that we love our new mobile phone but hate when our PC crashes.

Everyday technology and devices enhanced with emotion engineering and recognition can become more responsive and reactive to our needs. In entertainment and media, game developers can provide more believable and immersive environments where players can respond to and with the game as they would in real-life. The commercial sector would have a means for qualifying staff moral, motivation and emotion in order to respond to their needs, especially in the highly demanding sales and call-centre sectors.

We at the emotion engineering laboratory have extensive experience in developing desirable and useable prototypes and products. We can work with you to improve your existing product and service offering to become more emotionally appealing and engaging for your users. In addition to emotion engineering and recognition, we can also provide full speech solutions including speech recognition and text-to-speech which are not only tailored to your sector but also are interesting, responsive and engaging to your users.
